Shortly after the sun disappeared, Trina and Michelle picked up Darren. The three of them drove into the Warehouse District, and passed by the address Michelle’s contact had given them. Trina made sure not to slow down in front of it, just in case anyone happened to be looking. It wasn’t the greatest part of town, but plenty of people lived there, in condos and loft spaces that seemed to pop up out of nowhere, interspersed here and there among the myriad abandoned factories and warehouses.

“Definitely doesn’t look like a doctor’s office,” Darren said.

They parked a few blocks away and split up, each taking a different route through the surrounding blocks. Trina and Darren met up a few minutes later in front of the address. The building, some sort of modified warehouse, was poorly lit. There were windows in front, but no doors. Oddly enough, there was a wheelchair ramp that ran directly into a cinder block wall.

“The entrance is back here,” whispered Michelle, rolling around the corner, motioning backward with her head.

A few minutes later, Michelle was putting an old skill to use—picking the lock on the door in near record time.

“Running more than likely kept me out of prison,” she said with a shrug. The door eased open and the three of them moved in as quietly as they could.

The interior was lit by a handful of fluorescent lights scattered irregularly throughout the space, leaving plenty of dim spaces and dark corners.

There were several small rooms near the entrance, and each of them seemed to be largely for storage. One was filled with nothing but an assortment of very colorful coats, some on hangers, but many just piled in cardboard boxes. The smallest room held nothing but a dirty mattress. Another contained a series of connected fish tanks. The aquariums were filled with water, somewhat murky, each tinted a dingy brown. There were body parts inside—some human, some covered with scales and suckers. Some of them floated and moved, others lay lifeless at the bottoms of their tanks.

A silver tray sat on a small corner table, containing what appeared to be a larger-than-average chicken heart. Clear tubes ran in and out of it, while red fluid pulsed through them. The heart was beating.

“What the fuck?” said Michelle, keeping her voice low. Darren and Trina were startled as much by the voice as the sights in front of them, but they both remained quiet.

At the end of the main hall, the space expanded into a larger room—Dr. Griffin Rains’ main laboratory. They moved in, exploring the space, which was illuminated mainly by the dim glow of a hundred or so small machines, each with a different arrangement of LEDs and electronic displays.

There were tables everywhere, covered with glassware—beakers, test tubes, globes with roller coaster piping twisted all about, mysterious liquids, heating elements. The walls were lined with shelves and glass cases all the way up to the ceiling, some covered with drop cloths, others bare and empty. Plastic tubing seemed to come from every direction, curling in and around dozens of active experiments.
